Postano
Postano was a social media aggregation platform that let brands curate posts from Instagram, X, Facebook and YouTube and display them as social walls on websites, event screens and digital signage. Sprinklr acquired Postano in 2016 and turned it into Sprinklr Display, and postano.com no longer serves the product. Any legacy Postano embed still on a site loads third party content and should be consented, replaced or removed.
What does Postano do?
What is Postano?
Postano was a social media aggregation and visualisation platform. Brands and event organisers used it to collect posts by hashtag, account or keyword from networks such as Instagram, X (formerly Twitter), Facebook, YouTube and Tumblr, moderate them, and publish the result as a "social wall" or hub on a website, in a mobile app, on stadium and event screens or on in store digital signage. Its clients included sports teams, media groups and retail brands. Postano started in Chicago, was owned by TigerLogic, and was acquired by Sprinklr in March 2016; Sprinklr relaunched the technology in 2017 as Sprinklr Display, part of its customer experience platform.
Today postano.com no longer serves a product site: the domain redirects to an Amazon S3 bucket that returns an access denied error. Websites that still carry a Postano embed code are therefore running a legacy integration that may be broken or unmaintained, while organisations that need a social wall now use Sprinklr Display or another aggregator.
Data and cookies involved
A Postano wall was embedded with a JavaScript snippet or an iframe served from Postano's infrastructure. When a visitor opens the page, the browser requests the wall from Postano and the images, videos and avatars from the social networks' own servers, for example Instagram's CDN or pbs.twimg.com for X. Each request reveals the visitor's IP address, user agent and the page URL. Postano did not publish a cookie list, so any first or third party identifiers it used for engagement analytics are undocumented. Embedded video posts can add cookies from the network concerned, such as YouTube's VISITOR_INFO1_LIVE and YSC.
GDPR and ePrivacy implications
Two sets of rules apply. Under ePrivacy Directive art. 5(3), as applied by the French CNIL guidelines, German TDDDG § 25 and Spanish LSSI CE art. 22.2, any cookie or identifier stored by the wall or the embedded media needs prior consent unless strictly necessary, which social content is not. Under the GDPR, the website operator who chooses to embed third party content is a joint controller for the transmission of visitors' data to that third party, as the CJEU held in Fashion ID. The posts themselves also contain personal data of their authors, so republishing them requires a legal basis, transparency and a way to remove content on request.
Consent requirements
Because the wall pulls content and potentially cookies from Postano and social networks, the safest approach is to block it until the visitor consents, using a placeholder with a "load social content" button managed by your CMP. Do not rely on legitimate interest to load social media embeds automatically; several German courts and supervisory authorities have taken the view that transmitting IP addresses to third party servers without need or consent is unlawful. For event screens in a physical venue, inform attendees through signage that their public posts with the event hashtag may be displayed.
Data transfers outside the EEA
Postano and its successor Sprinklr are US companies, the postano.com domain is hosted in the AWS us-east-1 region, and the social networks whose content is displayed are mostly US based. Transfers can rely on the EU US Data Privacy Framework for certified recipients and on Standard Contractual Clauses (SCC 2021/914) otherwise, with a transfer impact assessment as required since Schrems II. Check the current Sprinklr DPA and hosting options if you use Sprinklr Display.
Practical compliance steps
Audit your pages for any remaining Postano embed code or requests to postano.com and remove them, since the service is discontinued. If you replace it, choose a solution that supports consent gating and document it in your cookie policy, privacy notice and record of processing. Configure your CMP to block the wall and embedded videos until consent, explain which networks receive data, and set up a process to remove posts at the author's request. Consider an EU based social wall tool such as Walls.io, operated by an Austrian company, and review the vendor DPA and hosting location before signing.
Postano and the GDPR
Postano is classified as “Marketing”. On a site that targets European visitors, it must only load after the visitor consents, and it must be listed in your cookie policy.
- Legal basis
- Consent (GDPR Art. 6(1)(a) and ePrivacy Directive art. 5(3)) is needed where the embedded wall or the social media content it displays (for example YouTube videos) stores or reads cookies or identifiers, and for any engagement analytics. Loading media from social network servers transfers personal data to third parties, which supervisory authorities generally expect to be gated behind consent or a click to load placeholder. Showing user generated posts also needs a basis such as legitimate interest or the authors' permission.
- Risk level
- medium
- Applicable regulations
- GDPR (Art. 5, 6, 13, 14, 26, 28, 44 to 49), ePrivacy Directive 2002/58/EC art. 5(3), French CNIL cookie guidelines, German TDDDG § 25, Spanish LSSI CE art. 22.2, EU US Data Privacy Framework, SCC 2021/914 and Schrems II, plus copyright and platform terms for reusing user generated content.
Impact assessment (DPIA)
A social wall alone rarely requires a DPIA, because it mainly republishes public posts and passes visitor IP addresses to social networks. A DPIA becomes advisable if the wall is combined with hashtag campaigns that collect entrants' data, moderation of user profiles at scale, or engagement analytics linked to identified visitors. Document the sources aggregated, how authors are informed and how takedown requests are handled. For legacy Postano embeds, the main risk is an unmaintained third party script, which you should remove.

What Postano sets and contacts
- Tracking method
- Postano was a social media aggregation and display platform: brands curated posts from Instagram, X (Twitter), Facebook, YouTube and other networks and published them as social walls embedded on websites (JavaScript embed or iframe hosted by Postano) or shown on event screens and digital signage. The embed loads curated posts and media directly from the social networks' CDNs, so visitor browsers contact Postano and those networks. Postano was acquired by Sprinklr in 2016 and its technology became Sprinklr Display; postano.com no longer serves the product and returns an Amazon S3 access denied error as of October 2026.
- Server location
- Historically United States: Postano was based in Chicago, then owned by TigerLogic and, since March 2016, by Sprinklr Inc. (New York). The postano.com domain is hosted on Amazon S3 in the us-east-1 region (Virginia). Current Sprinklr Display customers should check their Sprinklr contract for the hosting region.
- Data transferred outside the EU
- Embedded social walls send visitors' IP addresses and browser data to Postano or Sprinklr infrastructure in the United States and to the social networks whose media is displayed (Meta, X, Google for YouTube), mostly US companies. Transfers rely on the EU US Data Privacy Framework for certified recipients and on Standard Contractual Clauses (SCC 2021/914) otherwise; check Sprinklr's DPA for the current mechanism.
Cookies set (3)
| Name | Type | Duration | Purpose |
|---|---|---|---|
| Postano embed identifier | HTTP cookie (third party) | Not documented | Typical identifier a Postano social wall embed could set to count views and interactions with the wall. Postano never published its cookie names; check with a scan if a legacy embed is still present. Requires consent. |
| VISITOR_INFO1_LIVE | HTTP cookie (third party) | 6 months | YouTube cookie set when a video post is displayed in the social wall; estimates bandwidth and stores player preferences, also used by Google for tracking. Requires consent. |
| YSC | HTTP cookie (third party) | Session | YouTube session cookie set when an embedded video post is loaded through the wall; records video views. Requires consent. |

Frequently asked questions about Postano
Can't find your question? Write to us, we answer fast.
Which cookies does Postano set?
Postano never published a cookie list, so any identifiers its embed used for engagement statistics are undocumented. The social media content it displays can add cookies from the networks concerned, for example YouTube's VISITOR_INFO1_LIVE and YSC when video posts are shown. Scan your pages to see what actually loads.
Is consent required for a Postano social wall?
Yes, in practice. The wall loads content and media from Postano and social networks, which transfers visitors' IP addresses to third parties and can set cookies covered by ePrivacy Directive art. 5(3). Block it behind a click to load placeholder or your CMP until the visitor accepts.
What legal basis applies to Postano?
Consent (GDPR Art. 6(1)(a)) for loading the embed and any cookies it or the social networks set. Republishing other people's public posts can rely on legitimate interest (Art. 6(1)(f)) with clear information and an easy takedown process, or on the authors' explicit permission for hashtag campaigns.
Does Postano transfer data to the US?
Yes. Postano and its owner Sprinklr are US companies, postano.com is hosted on AWS in us-east-1, and the displayed networks (Meta, X, Google) are mostly US based. Transfers rely on the EU US Data Privacy Framework for certified recipients or on SCC 2021/914 with a Schrems II transfer assessment.
Is a DPIA needed for Postano?
Usually not for a simple social wall. A DPIA becomes advisable if the wall is tied to campaigns collecting participant data, large scale moderation of profiles, or engagement analytics on identified visitors. Document your reasoning either way.
How do I handle Postano compliantly today?
Postano was acquired by Sprinklr in 2016 and postano.com no longer serves the product, so remove any leftover embed code and requests to postano.com. If you need a social wall, use a maintained tool, gate it behind consent, list it in your cookie and privacy policies and set up a takedown process for authors.
What are alternatives to Postano?
Sprinklr Display is the direct successor for Sprinklr customers. For an EU based option, Walls.io is operated by an Austrian company; check its DPA and hosting location before signing. Whatever you choose, make sure it can be blocked until consent.
How do I update my cookie policy for Postano?
If Postano is removed, delete it from your cookie policy and privacy notice and rescan your site. If you replace it, list the new wall provider and every social network whose cookies may load through it, with names, durations, purposes and the transfers to the US. Keep a dated record of the change.
