MangaReader

UnclassifiedOfficial website

MangaReader is a WordPress theme by Themesia Studio for manga, manhwa and comic reading sites, with series pages, chapter lists, a built in reader, bookmarks and reading history. It runs on the site owner's own server and stores reader features in local storage rather than cookies. Privacy risks mostly come from the Photon image CDN, Google Fonts and the ads you place in its ad slots.

Overview

What does MangaReader do?

What the MangaReader theme is

MangaReader is a premium WordPress theme sold by Themesia Studio for manga, manhwa, manhua and comic reading websites. It provides series pages, chapter listings, a reader with full page and single page modes, lazy loading, image mirrors, a dark mode, bookmarks that work without an account, a reading history page and widget, an ads management panel and optional Photon CDN image acceleration. The theme is installed on the site owner''s own WordPress hosting; Themesia, which appears to be based in Indonesia, does not operate the sites built with it.

The MangaReader name is shared by several unrelated projects. MangaReader.site is an online reading site that belongs to the MangaHub network, and My Manga Reader CMS is a separate PHP script sold on CodeCanyon. This page covers the Themesia WordPress theme detected on websites; if you searched for mymangareader cms or mangareader.site, those products work differently and need their own assessment.

Data and storage used by the theme

The theme''s scripts use the browser''s local storage rather than cookies for its reader features: bookmark and bookmark_manually_pushed hold the series a visitor has bookmarked, mr_series_history keeps the recently read chapters, currentChapterList caches the chapter list of the current series and thememode remembers the light or dark choice. These entries stay on the device until the reader clears them; they are not sent to Themesia. WordPress itself may add its usual cookies for logged in users and commenters.

Depending on the options enabled, the theme also loads cover and page images through the Jetpack Photon CDN at i0.wp.com to i3.wp.com, operated by Automattic, and fonts from fonts.googleapis.com and fonts.gstatic.com. Each of these requests reveals the visitor''s IP address and user agent to the provider. The ad slots load whatever code the owner pastes in, which on manga sites is often several ad networks with their own cookies.

GDPR and ePrivacy implications

Local storage is covered by Article 5(3) of the ePrivacy Directive 2002/58/EC just like cookies. Bookmarks, reading history and the dark mode choice are features the reader actively uses, so they can be treated as strictly necessary for the service requested, an exemption recognised by the French CNIL, the German TDDDG § 25(2) and the Spanish LSSI CE art. 22.2. The chapter list cache is a technical convenience that follows the same logic.

Under the GDPR, loading Photon images and Google Fonts transmits IP addresses to third parties. A German court (LG München I, 2022) held that embedding Google Fonts dynamically without a legal basis violated the GDPR, so hosting fonts locally is the safer choice. Advertising and analytics placed in the ad slots are the main compliance issue and are not covered by any exemption.

Consent requirements

The MangaReader theme on its own does not require consent: it sets no tracking cookies, and its local storage serves the reader''s own actions. You can rely on legitimate interest under Article 6(1)(f) GDPR for operating the site and on the strictly necessary exemption for the stored preferences.

Consent becomes mandatory as soon as you fill the ad slots with ad networks, add Google Analytics or similar tools, or embed third party comment systems such as Disqus. These scripts must be blocked until the visitor accepts the relevant purposes in a banner that offers refusal as easily as acceptance. Popunders and aggressive formats common on reading sites can also raise consumer protection issues.

Data transfers outside the EU

The theme does not send visitor data to Themesia. Transfers come from the services you keep enabled: Photon is run by Automattic, a US company, and Google Fonts by Google; both rely on the EU US Data Privacy Framework or standard contractual clauses under Decision 2021/914. After Schrems II, check each provider''s current certification and document the transfer.

Ad networks used on manga sites are frequently based outside the EU and may pass data to many partners in real time bidding. Each one needs to be listed, covered by an appropriate transfer tool and placed behind consent. Disabling Photon in favour of your own server or an EU CDN and self hosting fonts removes the transfers caused by the theme itself.

Practical compliance steps

Audit the live site with your browser tools to list every domain loaded by the theme, the ad slots and plugins. Self host the fonts, switch off Photon or replace it with an EU CDN, and keep only the ad and analytics partners you really need. Put each remaining third party script behind your consent management platform and test that nothing loads before consent.

Document the local storage keys in your cookie policy as strictly necessary reader features, describe the Photon and Google Fonts processing if you keep them, and explain how readers can clear their bookmarks and history. Because many readers of manga sites are young, avoid personalised advertising for minors and review the legality of the content you publish.

Compliance

MangaReader and the GDPR

Legal basis
Legitimate interest (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR) for operating the reading site; the local storage entries serve features the reader explicitly uses (bookmarks, history, dark mode) and fall under the strictly necessary exemption of Art. 5(3) ePrivacy. Ads, analytics and comment widgets added to the theme require consent (Art. 6(1)(a)).
Risk level
medium
Applicable regulations
GDPR, ePrivacy Directive 2002/58/EC art. 5(3), French CNIL guidelines on cookies, German TDDDG § 25, Spanish LSSI CE art. 22.2, EU US Data Privacy Framework for Photon and Google Fonts transfers

Impact assessment (DPIA)

The theme alone rarely requires a DPIA: it stores reading preferences locally and sends nothing to Themesia. The assessment changes with what you add, since manga reading sites often run several ad networks, popunders and analytics that profile visitors at scale, which can meet the high risk criteria. Map every script loaded in the ad slots, the Photon and Google Fonts transfers and any comment system before deciding. Also consider that many visitors of reading sites are minors, which raises the bar for targeted advertising.

Cookies and trackers

What MangaReader sets and contacts

Tracking method
Self hosted WordPress theme (wp-content/themes/mangareader) running on the site owner's server. Its scripts store bookmarks, reading history, the last chapter list and the dark mode choice in the visitor's browser local storage, without cookies. Depending on configuration it loads images through the Jetpack Photon CDN (i0.wp.com to i3.wp.com) and fonts from Google Fonts; ad slots load whatever ad network code the owner inserts.
Server location
Wherever the site owner hosts WordPress; the theme sends no visitor data to Themesia. Optional Photon image delivery runs on Automattic infrastructure (United States based company) and Google Fonts on Google servers worldwide.
Cookieless mode available
Yes
Data transferred outside the EU
The theme itself transfers nothing, but with its default options visitors' IP addresses reach Automattic (Photon CDN, i*.wp.com) and Google (Google Fonts), both US companies; check their current EU US Data Privacy Framework certification or rely on SCC 2021/914. Self hosting fonts and serving images from your own server or an EU CDN removes these transfers. Ad networks plugged into the ad slots usually add further transfers.

Questions

Frequently asked questions about MangaReader

Can't find your question? Write to us, we answer fast.

Which cookies or storage does the MangaReader theme use?

The Themesia MangaReader theme uses local storage rather than cookies: bookmark and bookmark_manually_pushed for bookmarks, mr_series_history for reading history, currentChapterList for the chapter list cache and thememode for dark mode. WordPress can add its own cookies for logged in users and commenters, and ad networks in the ad slots set their own cookies.

Is consent required for the MangaReader theme?

Not for the theme itself. Its local storage only serves features the reader actively uses, which falls under the strictly necessary exemption of Article 5(3) ePrivacy. Consent is required for the ads, analytics and comment widgets you add, which on manga sites are almost always present.

What is the legal basis when using MangaReader?

Legitimate interest under Article 6(1)(f) GDPR covers operating the reading site, and the stored reader preferences are exempt from consent as strictly necessary. Advertising, audience measurement and third party embeds rely on consent under Article 6(1)(a).

Does MangaReader transfer data to the US or other third countries?

The theme sends nothing to Themesia, but with Photon enabled images load from i0.wp.com to i3.wp.com (Automattic, US) and fonts from Google, which transmits visitors' IP addresses. Check both providers' EU US Data Privacy Framework certification or rely on SCC 2021/914, or self host fonts and images to avoid the transfer. Ad networks usually add further transfers.

Do I need a DPIA for a MangaReader site?

Not for the theme alone. A DPIA becomes advisable when the site combines several ad networks, behavioural profiling and a large or young audience, which is common on manga reading sites. Assess the full stack of scripts, not just the theme.

How do I make a MangaReader site GDPR compliant?

Self host fonts, disable Photon or replace it with an EU CDN, and keep only the ad and analytics partners you need. Block every third party script until consent through a consent management platform, and document the local storage keys as strictly necessary in your cookie policy. Avoid personalised ads for minors.

What are EU based alternatives for the third party parts of MangaReader?

You can keep the theme and swap its external services: Bunny Fonts and the Bunny.net CDN from Slovenia replace Google Fonts and Photon, and Plausible (Estonia) or a self hosted Matomo replace US analytics. Comparable manga themes such as Madara are not EU based either, so the hosting and third party choices matter more than the theme.

How should I update my cookie policy for MangaReader?

List the local storage keys bookmark, bookmark_manually_pushed, mr_series_history, currentChapterList and thememode as strictly necessary reader features that stay until cleared. Describe the Photon and Google Fonts processing if enabled, and list every cookie set by your ad and analytics partners with their purpose and duration.
