Open source error tracking platform compatible with the Sentry SDK that can be self hosted in the EU or used as a US managed service.
GlitchTip is an open source error tracking platform created by Burke Software, fully compatible with the Sentry SDK protocol. Teams use it to capture exception stack traces, breadcrumbs and release metadata from web, mobile and backend applications, with the option of running it on their own infrastructure.
GlitchTip itself does not set tracking cookies on visitor websites. Backend SDKs send error events directly. The browser SDK can attach user context, breadcrumbs and (depending on configuration) URL query parameters and form inputs that may incidentally contain personal data.
Backend error reporting can rely on legitimate interest (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR). The browser SDK can fall under Article 5(3) ePrivacy when it stores breadcrumbs or sets cookies, in which case consent is required. Configure scrubbing rules to remove form values, query parameters and authorisation headers from events.

Self host GlitchTip on EU infrastructure (Hetzner, Scaleway, Kubernetes in AWS Frankfurt) to keep all data in the EU. If you use GlitchTip Cloud, sign Standard Contractual Clauses with Burke Software, complete a TIA and document the US transfer in your RoPA.
Self host on EU infrastructure where possible, configure aggressive PII scrubbing, set short retention for events, gate the browser SDK behind your CMP, document the install in your RoPA and sign the GlitchTip DPA when using the cloud version.
Websites using GlitchTip must obtain user consent under GDPR regulations.
DPIA considerations
A DPIA is generally not required for a self hosted GlitchTip used purely for backend errors. It becomes necessary when the browser SDK captures session replays, user context or stack traces that may incidentally contain personal data.
Sample consent text
We use GlitchTip to monitor application errors. With your consent, the GlitchTip browser SDK collects diagnostic information about the page that may contain technical metadata.

| Name | Type | Duration | Purpose |
|---|---|---|---|
| glitchtip_breadcrumbs | first_party | Session | Optional localStorage entry used by the GlitchTip browser SDK to remember breadcrumbs when offline batching is enabled. |
| csrftoken | first_party | 1 year | CSRF token used by the GlitchTip web application itself for authenticated dashboards (operator side). |
GlitchTip uses cookies for user preferences — inform visitors with a consent banner.
GlitchTip itself does not set tracking cookies on visitor websites. The browser SDK may store breadcrumbs in localStorage; this triggers ePrivacy when activated.
Backend usage does not require consent. The browser SDK requires consent under Article 5(3) ePrivacy when it stores information on the device or attaches user identifiers.
Legitimate interest (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR) for backend error reporting. Consent (Art. 6(1)(a)) for the browser SDK when it stores client side state or user context.
Self hosted GlitchTip stays where you deploy it. GlitchTip Cloud is in the United States and requires SCCs and a TIA.
Generally no for a self hosted backend deployment. Yes when session replays or sensitive form inputs may flow into events.
Self host on EU infrastructure, configure scrubbing rules, set short retention, gate the browser SDK behind your CMP and document the deployment in your RoPA.
Sentry (with EU residency on Business and above), Bugsnag, Rollbar, Honeybadger, Highlight.io and self hosted Grafana Faro plus Loki.
Mention GlitchTip and its hosting location, list any localStorage breadcrumbs or cookies set by the browser SDK and disclose the right to withdraw consent.
