Autoptimize is an analytics and measurement platform providing deep insights into digital ecosystem performance. It tracks user interactions, measures campaign effectiveness, and identifies optimization opportunities across web and mobile. Autoptimize offers customizable dashboards, automated alerts, and data export capabilities. By transforming raw data into actionable intelligence, Autoptimize empowers organizations to optimize strategy and maximize return on investment.
Autoptimize is a free open source WordPress plugin developed in Belgium by Frank Goossens (Futtta) since 2009. With more than a million active installations it is one of the most widely used WordPress performance optimisation tools, especially for sites that want a free alternative to WP Rocket. Because it runs entirely on the customer server and processes no personal data, it is one of the rare plugins that is fundamentally privacy neutral.
Autoptimize concatenates and minifies CSS, JavaScript and HTML, inlines critical CSS, lazy loads images and iframes, and can defer or async JavaScript. The optional image optimisation feature proxies images through Shortpixel CDN or another provider. The plugin integrates with WP Rocket, WP Super Cache, W3 Total Cache and Cloudflare for further performance gains.
Autoptimize does not set cookies, does not collect analytics, does not fingerprint visitors and does not phone home. Cached and minified assets are stored in the WordPress uploads or content directory on the customer server. Page generation can be slower the first time after a cache purge but is faster for every visitor afterwards.
Because Autoptimize does not process personal data, no GDPR lawful basis is required and no ePrivacy consent is needed. The plugin is GDPR compatible by design. The only point of attention is the optional image CDN proxy: enabling Shortpixel sends image URLs (not personal data) to Shortpixel servers in Romania and the Netherlands, which is EU based.

By default no transfer takes place. If you enable the image CDN, requests are rewritten to a third party domain (Shortpixel by default, but you can configure any CDN). Shortpixel is operated by Shortpixel SRL in Romania with infrastructure in the Netherlands and Romania. If you choose a non EU CDN such as KeyCDN US or AWS CloudFront, you must document the transfer mechanism for the image URLs and any cookies set by the CDN edge.
Enable Autoptimize without restriction. If you turn on the image CDN proxy, verify the CDN region and document it in your privacy notice and records of processing. Avoid mixing Autoptimize with Google PageSpeed services that load remote Google Fonts: prefer self hosted fonts. No consent banner entry is needed for Autoptimize itself.
Websites using Autoptimize must obtain user consent under GDPR regulations.

None. Autoptimize is a server side optimisation plugin: it concatenates and minifies static assets and lazy loads images. It does not set cookies, does not collect visitor analytics and does not fingerprint visitors.
No. Autoptimize processes no personal data and sets no cookie, so Art. 5(3) ePrivacy and Art. 6 GDPR do not apply. The only point of attention is the optional image CDN proxy if you decide to enable it.
Not applicable. Autoptimize does not process personal data. If the image CDN is enabled, the lawful basis for the third party CDN follows the usual analysis (typically legitimate interest under Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR for performance and security).
Not by Autoptimize itself. Image bytes are transferred to the chosen image CDN if you enable that feature. Shortpixel (default) stores data in Romania and the Netherlands (EU). Other CDNs (Cloudflare US, KeyCDN, AWS CloudFront) involve their own transfer rules.
No, Autoptimize itself does not require a DPIA. The plugin is not in scope of Art. 35 GDPR because no personal data is processed.
Activate the plugin, enable HTML, CSS and JavaScript optimisation, inline critical CSS, lazy load images and exclude assets that break with optimisation (typically third party widgets). If you enable the image CDN, choose an EU based provider such as Shortpixel and document it.
WP Rocket (France, premium), W3 Total Cache (US, free), WP Super Cache (Automattic, US, free), Asset CleanUp (Romania, freemium), Hummingbird (WPMU DEV, US), LiteSpeed Cache (US, free if you use LiteSpeed servers).
Autoptimize is not listed in the cookie policy because it sets no cookies. Update only if you enable or change the image CDN provider, in which case document the new CDN under the third party transfers section.
